Riding on the Recession,,, Yeah, I got HIT too.
Wow, its been ages since I last wrote about whats up with my life. Nothing’s exactly up, its been a roller coaster ride lately (eew how cliché). I didn’t want to go back here, but for a lack of anything better to do in my new job, I’m now writing sweet-nothings. (cliché number2). Oh yeah, I was recently hit by the recession here in Dubai. You only hear about it, you read in on the news, you see it online… 1000 jobs cuts , 500 laid off.. but it’s not the same, the impact will only hit you hard once you get that terrible termination letter. Oooh how my heart hammered in my chest (cliché number3), when I got that WHITE ENVELOPE with my name on the back.. the Boss, (Ernie) gave it to me.. and I even smiled my thanks. What-a-fake! I didn’t want to smile but, what can you say? What can you do? Thank you for terminating me! Or may be freak out and tear it up without reading it.. and say: I do not accept this! Haha! I couldn’t very well do those things now, when I know very well that the business is very bad. Our clients weren’t paying up. The company had to let me go. I knew this. From the moment my boss (chris) got terminated.
You can skip this boring part (previous company background):
Let me give you a tad of what I’ve been doing here for that past 9 months. I was hired by an Irish company as a software developer for their company. The company itself is a Construction company. And they want to automate their purchasing system, but didn’t want to purchase a ready-made software, so they hired me to develop the said system inhouse. So, I’m not really part of the income-generating staff. It’s only natural that they let me go…
Okay now, back to my white envelope. So yeah, I got the horrible white envelope last January 25, saying that I’m officially well, fired, as of Feb 28. It’s a one month’s notice. I can stop working for them starting January 26 but they’ll still pay my salary til the 28th of February, this is to give me time to look for another job. And since my employment visa is attached to this company, they said that they’ll keep my visa open for 3 more months.
Within that timeframe, I was able to find a new job. But not in my field of… experience (I cant call myself an expert in my field) yeah, all my life… ahem.. I mean work-life, I’ve been dealing with computers. I’m a software developer/programmer what-not. Now, I’ve accepted a job in an IT company still, but my work’s no longer IT. Bummer. I know. It’s a global financial crisis, beggars can’t be choosers (cliché number 4). I’ve accepted a marketing job. Basically, I’m an Accounts Manager.. title sounds fancy? It’s not, I really don’t know what I’m supposed to do! The boss just said that when our customers have like customization requests or like they want an addition feature, they’d be talking to me first hand. A person in an ad agency would know what I’m talking about. The boss here just wanted to hire an IT person because the product is a software. So that’s it, I’d also be presenting our product from time to time, if banks are interested. What’s our product? You know your ATM card? Your credit card? Those little lifelines we carry around? We do the software in those magical widdle plastic cards. All the info stored and all the transactions done, all the features, the loyalty points, the rewards, software of the server… we do all that. It’s a one stop shop solution for banks. Haha! Did I just plug our software? Hehe. Well that’s my current job! And I haven’t done anything yet!
On my first day though, my boss asked me to create a proposal. I’d done it, but I don’t know if they’ll use it. Today, I tagged along with a meeting with one of our clients. They were speaking Chinese! (this is figuratively speaking my dear audience.) I’d only understand half of all the technical and financial terms! I’ve got a long way to go! And I’ve no experience what-so ever with dealing with people! Haggling prices~ well, now, I’m forced to learn….
Got tired of reading? Me too, I got tired of writing. Well, ta ta!
